We are challenged to transform the way we travel, manage water, cope with waste, use our land and produce energy. Such challenges cannot be dealt with in isolation and it requires more than just new technology or new rules. The public world, business world, society and academic world need to engage in a new way of thinking, working, interacting to create new structures and models.

Transitions require innovations which are tested through experiments and prototyping. Transitions must be seen in a wider institutional context of uncertainties and change. A focus on power differences and language barriers is required, creating legitimacy and building trust. Systems innovation is the result of collective effort of a variety of actors overarching different levels.
